My wife and I love traveling and nature, so naturally we love visiting the National Parks! Given the recent news regarding the game Trekking the National Parks by Bink Ink LLC and Underdog Games (look it up if you haven’t heard about it), we knew we wanted to support the company and the game looked fun!

We got the game over the weekend during their 40% off sale and here are our thoughts after a couple plays:

    Component Quality:
The box is thick and sturdy, with a good quality large board and oversized wooden pieces.
The insert is good and all components fit nicely. With a little reconfiguring (including 2 $1 Stackable Crayon Boxes) the insert even accommodates all cards sleeved!
The cards are good quality, and the National Park Cards being tarot sized with educational information regarding the Parks is a nice touch!
Basically, we are thoroughly impressed with the build quality alone!

    Gameplay:
This game is light, with simple, easy to learn rules, while still providing some strategic gameplay and different ways to gather points. You can go straight for claiming the 5 National Park cards needed to end the game, hit some/all the Major National Parks available to get special abilities, or try to gather more of the various colored stones than everyone else to sneak in more points. You definitely need to watch your opponents, lest they sneak in and claim the National Park you are going for (which happened to me).
As others have mentioned in reviews, this does have a Ticket to Ride feel to it, while being different enough to stand on its own. Personally, I like it better than Ticket to Ride! The theme will appeal to a wide audience, and is streamlined enough that I could teach this game to anyone and within a coupon turns they are playing with little to no guidance or rule reminders.

    Replayability:
With 96 Park Cards and 6 Major Park Cards (only 3 are in play during each game), and the colored stones being placed randomly each game, Trekking the National Parks has a ton of replayability to it, and every game will be different from previous plays!

    Final Thoughts:
This is one of my new go to games when it comes to gateway games that are also enjoyable to veteran gamers. With a theme that is appealing to almost everyone, such streamlined rules and ease of play that still provides good (while not too deep) strategic strategies, you can’t go wrong with Trekking the National Parks!
